Asunción is the capital and largest city of Paraguay, with about 464,000 people in the city itself and a much larger metropolitan area. Founded in 1537 on the Paraguay River, it is one of the oldest Spanish-founded cities in South America and was historically known as the “Mother of Cities” because colonial expeditions to other parts of the region set out from here. The historic centre includes the Palacio de los López, the National Pantheon of the Heroes, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Casa de la Independencia and the old Cabildo, while the Costanera waterfront gives views across the river and toward the Chaco. Modern Asunción spreads into business and nightlife districts such as Villa Morra and Carmelitas, with shopping centres, restaurants, bars and venues away from the old core. Getting in and around is straightforward via Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, taxis, buses and ride-hailing, though traffic can be heavy and the city is generally easier with short vehicle hops than long walks.
