Norway, located in Northern Europe, is internationally renowned for its pivotal role in shaping black metal. While heavy metal took root in the country during the 1980s with bands like TNT gaining success abroad, it was the early 1990s second wave of black metal that placed Norway firmly on the global metal map. Bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor, and Immortal developed a raw, atmospheric, and often controversial style that became highly influential worldwide.
In later years, Norway’s metal scene has expanded to include a wide range of subgenres, from the progressive sounds of Enslaved and Leprous, to thrash like Aura Noir and Nekromantheon, to the folk-infused metal of Lumsk and Trollfest. The country also hosts major events like Inferno Metal Festival, Beyond the Gates, Tons of Rock, and Karmøygeddon, attracting fans from across the globe. Known for its passionate audiences and distinctive sound, Norway continues to be a driving force in the evolution of heavy metal.
