TAIWAN

Taiwan’s heavy metal scene began to develop more visibly after the end of martial law in 1987, when access to international rock and metal culture expanded. By the 1990s, Taipei had become the principal centre of a growing underground, with smaller scenes also developing in Taichung and Kaohsiung.

The most important band in Taiwanese metal history is Chthonic, formed in Taipei in 1995. Emerging initially from black metal, the band developed a distinctive mixture of black, death, folk and symphonic metal incorporating Taiwanese mythology, history and traditional instruments such as the erhu. Their music has frequently addressed episodes from Taiwan’s past, and their extensive international touring helped make Chthonic the country’s best-known metal band abroad.

The scene expanded significantly during the 2000s. Seraphim, formed in Taipei in 2001, became one of Taiwan’s leading melodic power metal bands, while Anthelion, also formed in 2001, established themselves within symphonic black metal. Flesh Juicer, formed in Taichung in 2006, later became one of the country’s most successful modern metal acts, combining extreme metal with electronic elements and references to Taiwanese folk religion and culture. Their album “GOLDEN Taizi Bro” helped earn the band the Best Band award at Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards in 2022.

Taiwan has also developed an important live infrastructure around its rock and independent music communities. Metal Mania operated as a dedicated heavy metal festival during the early 2000s, while larger events such as Formoz Festival and Megaport Music Festival have regularly provided stages for heavier Taiwanese acts alongside international artists. Metal remains a relatively niche genre in Taiwan, but the country has developed one of the more distinctive underground scenes in East Asia, particularly through bands that combine international metal styles with Taiwanese language, history and cultural traditions.
