Cyprus has a small but long-established heavy metal scene, centred mainly around Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca. The scene began developing during the 1980s and became more organised in the 1990s, with local musicians drawing heavily from traditional heavy metal, thrash, doom, and the growing European extreme metal underground.

One of the most important names in Cypriot metal is Armageddon Rev.16:16, whose roots stretch back to the mid-1980s and who became pioneers of the island’s traditional heavy and power metal scene. Arrayan Path, formed in the 1990s, later became one of Cyprus’s best-known metal exports with their epic power metal and lyrics frequently inspired by mythology and history. Cyprus has also developed a strong connection to doom metal through bands such as Solitary Sabred, while Winter’s Verge have represented the island internationally with their melodic power metal.

The heavier underground has produced bands spanning death, black, and other extreme styles, while Cyprus’s geographical position has helped create connections with the metal scenes of Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. Nicosia in particular has developed a network of rock and metal bars, clubs, record shops, and promoters supporting both Cypriot musicians and visiting international bands.
