Paraguay’s heavy metal scene began to emerge in the 1980s, developing through a close-knit underground community centred on Asunción. Influenced by the thrash and traditional heavy metal movements in neighbouring Brazil and Argentina, local musicians built the scene through independent concerts, tape trading, and grassroots promotion.
One of the country’s most influential bands is Rawhide, formed in 1983. Combining thrash and groove metal, they became Paraguay’s best-known metal export, sharing stages with international acts and touring throughout South America. Another notable name is Kuazar, formed in 2002, whose technically accomplished thrash metal has earned international recognition through acclaimed albums such as Wrath of God and Hybrid Power.
The Paraguayan scene spans a wide range of styles, from traditional heavy metal and thrash to death and black metal, with Asunción remaining the country’s centre for concerts, rehearsal spaces, and independent labels. While relatively small, the community has maintained a strong DIY spirit and close ties with the wider South American metal scene.
