Sweden, located in Northern Europe, is one of the most influential countries in the global metal scene. The Swedish heavy metal movement began gaining momentum in the 1980s with pioneering acts like Heavy Load and the epic blackened metal of Bathory, whose early albums helped define both black metal and Viking metal.
In the early 1990s, Sweden became home to two world-famous death metal scenes. In Gothenburg, the melodic death metal sound was pioneered by In Flames, At the Gates, and Dark Tranquillity, while in Stockholm, bands like Entombed, Dismember, and Grave developed a raw, chainsaw-like guitar tone — the iconic buzzsaw sound — that became a hallmark of Swedish death metal.
Sweden is also known for its contributions to doom metal through bands like Candlemass and Katatonia, as well as black metal with acts such as Marduk and Dark Funeral. In addition, the country has a thriving power and symphonic metal scene with HammerFall and Sabaton achieving international success. Major festivals like Sweden Rock Festival attract fans from around the world, solidifying Sweden’s place as a powerhouse in heavy metal.
