Germany has one of the longest and most important heavy metal traditions in Europe. Its foundations can be traced to the hard rock scene of the 1970s, particularly through Scorpions, who became one of Germany’s first internationally successful rock bands. By the beginning of the 1980s, Accept had established a heavier and more aggressive sound with albums such as “Breaker”, “Restless and Wild”, and “Balls to the Wall”, helping to place German heavy metal firmly on the international map.

During the 1980s, West Germany became especially important to the development of thrash, speed, and power metal. Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction formed the core of what became known internationally as Teutonic thrash metal, with Tankard later commonly associated with the same movement. Their harsher and often more extreme approach helped shape the European thrash and extreme metal underground. At the same time, bands such as Helloween combined speed metal with melody and helped define the modern European power metal sound, particularly through the “Keeper of the Seven Keys” albums. Running Wild, Blind Guardian, and later Gamma Ray further established Germany as one of the genre’s most important centres.

The German scene continued to diversify during the 1990s. Morgoth became an important name in European death metal, while bands including Atrocity explored more experimental forms of extreme metal. The country also developed a particularly strong gothic, darkwave, and industrial culture. Oomph! were among the groups that helped establish Neue Deutsche Härte, a style that combined metal, industrial music, and German-language vocals, before Rammstein brought the sound to an enormous international audience during the second half of the decade. Other bands, including Lacrimosa, contributed to Germany’s broader gothic and dark music culture.

Germany has continued to produce internationally recognised metal bands across numerous styles. Edguy and Avantasia became prominent within power metal, Heaven Shall Burn established themselves in melodic death metal and metalcore, Necrophagist became highly influential in technical death metal, and bands such as The Ocean have represented the country within progressive and experimental metal. The German underground remains particularly extensive, covering everything from traditional heavy and doom metal to black metal, grindcore, death metal, and the most extreme forms of the genre.

Live music is equally important to German metal culture. Wacken Open Air, first held in the village of Wacken in 1990, grew from a small regional event into one of the world’s best-known heavy metal festivals. Germany is also home to major events such as Summer Breeze Open Air, Party.San Metal Open Air, Rock Hard Festival, and Keep It True, alongside a dense network of clubs, concert halls, independent promoters, record shops, and specialist labels.
