SOUTH KOREA

South Korea’s heavy metal scene began to take shape in the 1980s, with Seoul as its main centre. Sinawe, formed by guitarist Shin Dae-chul, is widely regarded as the country’s first major heavy metal band, helping establish the sound locally with their 1986 debut album.

By the late 1980s and early 1990s, heavier styles began to develop. Crash, formed in Seoul in 1989, became one of South Korea’s most important thrash metal bands, while acts such as Oathean helped build the country’s black and extreme metal underground during the 1990s.

Although South Korean metal has always existed in the shadow of the much larger K-pop industry, the scene has remained active and dedicated. Bands such as Method, Mahatma, Diablo, and Dark Mirror ov Tragedy show the range of the modern Korean scene, from thrash and groove metal to symphonic black metal.

Today, South Korea’s metal community is relatively small but persistent, centred mainly around Seoul and supported by underground venues, local promoters, and fans who continue to keep heavy music alive outside the country’s mainstream pop culture.
