Nepal has developed a distinctive underground heavy metal scene centred primarily on Kathmandu, with a smaller community also established in Pokhara. Hard rock and Western heavy metal had an audience in Kathmandu by the 1980s, and bands such as Wrathchild performed metal covers during the latter part of the decade. Cobweb, formed in 1993, became an important part of Nepal’s rock scene and was among the early groups to combine heavier Western influences with Nepali lyrics and musical elements.

A recognisable extreme metal underground emerged around the end of the 1990s. Ugra Karma were particularly important, recording the death metal demo “Himalayan Metal of Death” in 2000, widely regarded as the first Nepalese metal recording. X-Mantra also became central to the early scene, combining thrash and groove-oriented metal with lyrics in Nepali, while bands such as Antim Grahan subsequently helped develop the country’s black and extreme metal underground.

Later bands including Underside, Binaash, Chepang, and Symbol of Orion helped introduce Nepalese metal to a wider international audience. Underside in particular became one of the country’s most visible metal exports, performing abroad while remaining closely involved with the Kathmandu scene. Nepalese metal has encompassed death, black, thrash, grindcore, groove, and more experimental forms of extreme music, while largely retaining a strong DIY character.

An important milestone was the creation of Silence Festival in Kathmandu in 2011. It became Nepal’s principal international metal event and brought bands including Behemoth, Vader, Cancer Bats, SikTh, and Testament to the country while providing a major platform for local musicians. The festival has not taken place since its 2019 edition, largely because of financial and sponsorship difficulties, but its history illustrates how a relatively small Himalayan underground developed connections with the wider international metal scene.
