Milan is the largest city in northern Italy and the capital of Lombardy, with around 1.4 million people in the municipality and more than three million in the wider metropolitan area. The city originated as a Celtic settlement around the 4th century BC and was conquered by the Romans in 222 BC, becoming Mediolanum and later one of the most important cities of the Western Roman Empire. Today Milan is Italy’s main financial and commercial centre and is internationally known for fashion, design and culture. Major landmarks include the enormous Gothic Milan Cathedral, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Sforza Castle, La Scala opera house and Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. The Navigli canal district is particularly known for restaurants, bars and nightlife. Milan also has an important place in Italian heavy metal, most notably as the home of Lacuna Coil, formed in the city in 1994 and one of the country’s most internationally successful metal bands.
