Porto is Portugal’s second-largest city, a Douro River port of roughly 250,000 people in the municipality and around 1.8 million in the metropolitan area. It is one of Europe’s older urban centres, with roots in the Roman settlement of Portus Cale, and is best known for its UNESCO-listed historic centre, steep riverside streets and the port-wine trade across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. Highlights include the Ribeira waterfront, Porto Cathedral, the double-deck Dom Luís I Bridge, São Bento station’s tilework, Livraria Lello and the Clerigos Tower, while the Atlantic-facing Foz district adds beaches and sea air west of the centre. Getting in and around is straightforward via Porto Airport (OPO), São Bento and Campanhã railway stations, the Metro network and walkable central districts, though the hills make comfortable shoes a good idea.
