Riga is a Baltic capital of roughly 600,000 people (metro around 900,000), founded in 1201 and known for its UNESCO-listed Old Town and some of Europe’s finest Art Nouveau streets. The historic core mixes spires, guild houses and café squares; key stops include St Peter’s tower views, the House of the Blackheads and the vast Central Market in former zeppelin hangars, while Alberta iela showcases ornate fin-de-siècle façades. For quieter time, head to the Miera iela quarter and lakeside Mežaparks; evenings range from beer halls to small venues. Getting around is easy on foot and by tram, with Riga International Airport close by and simple suburban trains to the beach at Jūrmala.
