Tampere is Finland’s third-largest city, home to roughly 270,000 people (with around 350,000 in the wider urban area), founded in 1779 and built around the Tammerkoski rapids that run between lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Long nicknamed the “Manchester of Finland” for its industrial past, it’s now known for a lively mix of museums, design and live culture, with former factory districts like Finlayson turned into cafés, cinemas and event spaces. Key sights include the Vapriikki museum centre, the Moomin Museum, the panoramic Pyynikki ridge and observation tower, and Särkänniemi’s amusement park and Näsinneula tower. Tampere is also one of Finland’s big sauna cities, with public saunas and lakeside swimming as part of everyday life. Getting in and around is straightforward via fast trains between Helsinki and Tampere, a walkable centre with good tram and bus connections, and Tampere-Pirkkala Airport for domestic and seasonal routes.
