The Abyss is a heavy metal bar and live music venue on Andra Långgatan in Gothenburg, Sweden. Opened in 2016, it quickly became one of the city’s most recognisable bars dedicated specifically to hard rock and metal. Its location near Masthuggstorget places it in one of Gothenburg’s best-known nightlife areas, in a city with a long and internationally important connection to heavy music.
The bar combines a traditional metal-pub atmosphere with regular live concerts, themed nights and special events. Death metal, black metal, thrash, traditional heavy metal and hard rock all feature prominently in the programme, alongside other forms of extreme and underground music. The venue has hosted both Swedish bands and international touring acts, making it a regular meeting place for musicians and metal fans in Gothenburg.
The Abyss has also expanded beyond ordinary club shows through its own festival activity. Abyss Festival has brought larger underground names to Gothenburg, with previous editions featuring bands such as Possessed, Terrorizer, Deströyer 666, Varathron and Stormwitch. These events have strengthened the venue’s connection to the international underground metal scene while maintaining the intimate character of the regular bar and concert programme.
