A Bronze to Iron Age settlement was found in 1934, when a farm was built close to the church, in Uppåkra. Archaeological excavations in a 100-acre (0.40 km2) field intensified in 1996: they show Uppåkra to have been among the richest and largest Iron Age–Viking Age towns on the Scandinavian Peninsula.
In 2021, Norwegian black metal band Darkthtrone, released a song called “Lost Arcane City of Uppåkra”. The song is based of the ancient city that was once in Uppåkra, and later demolished and forgotten until recent times.
Lyrics:
Mystic appearance of a town that was never mentioned
Unveiling the lost from the shrouds of the iron age
Significant might, a thundering haven for heathens
A cryptic array of opinions from ancient Sweden
Uppåkra, desecrated by slaves of Kristi
Uppåkra, from long before the curse of Christ
Uppåkra, desecrated by slaves of Kristi
Uppåkra, from long before the curse of Christ
Envigorating excavation (of) a house of ancient cults
“What came upon us next?”, forlorn souls whisper
Defeating the vikings, burning the cult and a church they gave
Obtain force against Christ from a 4000 year old grave
Uppåkra, three burial mounds of hell
Uppåkra, I long (be)for(e) the cursed Christ
Korn og vann og kjøtt og bein
Myrdrag holder sjelen rein
Frihet styrker glissen ås
Aldri kristi skal vi nås
