CAMBRIDGE

Cambridge is a compact city of about 121,000 people (2025 estimate) just across the Charles River from Boston, settled in 1630 as “New Towne” and incorporated as a city in 1846. It’s best known globally for Harvard (founded 1636) and MIT (founded 1861; moved to Cambridge in 1916), which give the city its constant student energy, bookshops, museums and lecture-hall buzz. Highlights include strolling Harvard Yard and Harvard Square, walking the Charles River Esplanade-style paths along Memorial Drive, browsing the Harvard Art Museums, and hopping between Central Square and Kendall Square for food, bars and venues. Getting around is easy on foot, by bike and on the MBTA Red Line, with quick links into downtown Boston and connections out to Logan Airport via the wider transit network.
