EL SALVADOR

El Salvador’s heavy metal scene developed largely underground, shaped by decades of social and political instability and a smaller live infrastructure than many neighbouring countries. While the country’s civil war (1980–1992) made it difficult for rock and metal to grow openly, dedicated fans and musicians still built a local scene through tape trading, small gigs, and DIY networks.

Since the 1990s, San Salvador and the surrounding area have remained the main hubs, with bands across traditional heavy metal, thrash, and extreme subgenres keeping the scene active. A key meeting point for the community is El Salvador Metal Fest (often promoted as a long-running national metal event), which has helped showcase Salvadoran bands and strengthen the local metal identity.

Today, El Salvador’s metal culture remains niche but resilient—driven by committed fans, local promoters, and an underground spirit that continues to keep heavy music alive.
