DÜSSELDORF

Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine–Westphalia and a Rhine-side city of about 619,000 people (2024), first mentioned in the 12th century and granted town privileges in 1288. It’s best known for the Altstadt and its Altbier culture (often nicknamed “the longest bar in the world”), the luxury shopping boulevard Königsallee, and a modern skyline around the Rhine Tower and MedienHafen. For classic sightseeing, add the riverside promenade, the art museums (including the Kunstpalast/K20–K21 scene), and Schloss Benrath for a half-day palace-and-gardens trip. Getting in and around is straightforward via Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof and Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), with dense local trains, trams and U-Bahn lines linking the centre to the wider Rhine-Ruhr region.
