BELARUS

Belarus has a small but dedicated metal scene that grew largely in the late Soviet and post-Soviet years, with strong underground networks and close ties to neighbouring Eastern European scenes. One of the country’s best-known international names is Gods Tower from Gomel, a cult pagan/folk/doom band whose roots go back to 1989 and who adopted the Gods Tower name in 1992.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Belarus became particularly known for pagan and folk-influenced metal. Bands like Znich (formed in 1996) helped shape a distinctly Belarusian pagan/folk metal identity, while Litvintroll (formed in 2005) brought folk metal with prominent traditional instrumentation and a more festive, medieval-leaning approach.

While the scene is not large, it is persistent and stylistically distinctive, with Minsk and Gomel as key hubs and a reputation that often punches above its size through niche international followings in folk, pagan, and extreme metal circles.
