BOURNEMOUTH

Bournemouth is a Dorset seaside town of about 190,000 people (with the wider Bournemouth–Christchurch–Poole city topping 400,000), founded in 1810 as a health resort and expanded in the Victorian era. It’s known for seven miles of sandy beaches, cliff-top walks and the pier, with the Lower, Central and Upper Gardens threading the Bourne stream through the centre. Highlights include the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, St Peter’s Church (with the Shelley family graves), and neighbourhoods such as Westbourne, Boscombe and Southbourne for cafés, venues and surf spots. Expect a year-round events calendar and lively nights around the Triangle and Old Christchurch Road. Getting in is straightforward via Bournemouth Station on the South Western Main Line (around two hours to London Waterloo), Bournemouth Airport for domestic and European flights, and the A338 Wessex Way for road access.
