BRUGES

Bruges is a compact canal city with a well-preserved medieval centre that rewards slow wandering between bridges, cobbled lanes and gabled façades. The Markt is anchored by the landmark Belfry, while the nearby Burg square mixes civic and religious architecture, including the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Quiet corners include the Beguinage and the tree-lined Minnewater Park; art fans can dip into the Groeningemuseum, and windmills still stand along the Kruisvest. Food and drink skew Belgian classics—chocolate shops, cafés and beer bars—plus low-key late options around Langestraat. Everything is walkable, with bikes handy for longer loops. Frequent trains link Bruges with Ghent, Brussels and the coast, making it an easy base or day trip; expect heavier crowds in summer and around winter markets.
