CHEMNITZ

Chemnitz is a Saxon city with a modern core and pockets of older charm, rebuilt after the war and known for its striking Karl-Marx-Monument (“Nischel”) and generous public squares. Culture skews solid and accessible: the Kunstsammlungen galleries, the Industrial Museum, the Opera and the Gunzenhauser Museum (20th-century art) are all an easy walk from the centre. Older Chemnitz peeks through around the Schloßberg with its medieval Red Tower and the tranquil Schlossteich, while the leafy Kaßberg quarter shows off handsome Art Nouveau façades and cafés. Green space is abundant—Küchwaldpark and the riverside paths make relaxed loops—and day trips reach the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) or Augustusburg Castle in under an hour.
