CLOPHILL

Clophill is a small Bedfordshire village of about 1,800 people, recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) and set on the north bank of the River Flit near the A6/A507 between Bedford and Luton. Its best-known landmark is Old St Mary’s, a 14th-century hilltop church ruin on the Greensand Ridge—now a Grade II* listed, scheduled site with a restored tower viewpoint—while the present St Mary’s (1848) stands in the village centre. The ridge brings big skies and waymarked walking on the long-distance Greensand Ridge Walk, with easy links to nearby market towns for pubs and supplies. Buses and local roads make it a straightforward hop from Ampthill, Shefford and Bedford for short countryside breaks.
