CLUJ-NAPOCA

Cluj-Napoca is the unofficial capital of Transylvania, a lively university city of 286,598 people (2021 census) with roots in the Roman settlement of Napoca (established after the conquest of Dacia in AD 106) and a medieval city first attested as “Clus” in 1213. The compact centre revolves around Piața Unirii (Union Square) with St Michael’s Church and the Matthias Corvinus monument, while quick-hit highlights include Cetățuia Park for skyline views, the Botanical Garden, and café-lined streets that feel busy year-round thanks to the student population. It’s also one of Romania’s key cultural hubs, with major festivals and a strong nightlife scene. Getting in is straightforward via Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport (CLJ), about 9 km east of the centre, and the city is easy to cover on foot with buses and trams for longer hops.
