Croatia’s heavy metal scene developed in the 1980s, when the country was still part of Yugoslavia. Early metal bands often blended hard rock and heavy metal, with pioneers such as Divlje Jagode inspiring local acts. Zagreb became the main hub for the emerging scene, hosting underground gigs and small festivals despite limited access to Western music.
During the 1990s Croatian War of Independence, the scene suffered greatly, with many musicians halting activities or moving abroad. Nevertheless, some bands persevered, like Evil Blood.
In the 2000s and beyond, Croatia saw a revival with more diverse subgenres, from power metal to extreme styles. Bands like Ashes You Leave gained international recognition for their gothic doom metal, while Infernal Tenebra represented the death metal side. The country also developed a growing festival culture, with events like Metaldays Warm-Up in Zagreb and Underwall Festival in Zadar attracting international acts and audiences.
