CUBA

Heavy metal in Cuba has faced unique challenges due to decades of political isolation, censorship, and limited access to music from abroad. Despite this, an underground scene began to emerge in the 1980s, driven by bootleg tapes smuggled in from the US, Europe, and Latin America. Early Cuban metal fans were often viewed with suspicion by the authorities, with concerts sometimes shut down and fans harassed for their long hair, band shirts, and association with “Western” culture.

One of the earliest Cuban metal bands to gain recognition was Zeus, formed in 1988 in Havana, who blended classic heavy metal with elements of hard rock. The 1990s saw the rise of extreme metal acts such as Agonizer, Combat Noise, and Escape, who pushed thrash and death metal under difficult conditions, often playing on improvised stages with limited equipment.

The Cuban metal scene found a lifeline through state-sanctioned events like the Brutal Fest, launched in 2008, which brought international metal bands to the island and allowed local acts to perform for larger audiences.
