EL PASO

El Paso is a border city in far West Texas with about 682,000 residents (2024 estimate), set on the Rio Grande directly opposite Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. It grew from an old Spanish “pass of the north” crossing and mission-era settlement into a modern binational metro, and today it’s best known for its desert-mountain setting, strong Mexican-American culture, and a huge military presence at nearby Fort Bliss. Highlights include hiking and skyline views in Franklin Mountains State Park, the historic Mission Trail (including Ysleta), and downtown’s Plaza Theatre and ballpark district, with food that’s a real draw in its own right. Getting in is straightforward via El Paso International Airport (ELP), and local travel is easy with a car or Sun Metro buses, with New Mexico day trips (Las Cruces, White Sands) within reach.
