In 1990, Swedish death metal band Entombed released their debut album Left Hand Path. Inside the album cover, you can see the band standing in front of a giant cross in a cemetery, with snow falling around them. This cross, known as Granitkorset, is located at Skogskyrkogården in Stockholm. The idea to use the cross as a backdrop came from photographer Micke Lundström, who thought it would make a striking contrast to Entombed’s death metal aesthetic. The cross has since become a landmark for death metal fans from around the world.
In the same cemetery, you’ll also find the grave of vocalist L.G. Petrov. Skogskyrkogården was inaugurated in 1920 and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. It’s also worth mentioning that the famous actress Greta Garbo is buried there. The cross is easy to find if you enter from the side near the subway station.
