EURONYMOUS’ APARTMENT

Øystein Aarseth (1968–1993), better known by his stage name Euronymous, was the guitarist of the band Mayhem, as well as the founder of the record label Deathlike Silence and the record shop Helvete in Oslo. While living in the city, he resided at Tøyengata 40B — the same location where he was later killed.

On the night of 10 August 1993, he was visited by his former bandmate Varg Vikernes, who at the time performed under the name Count Grishnackh, translated by Norwegian media as “Greven.” Together with Snorre Ruch (Blackthorn), Vikernes had driven from Bergen to Oslo to meet Aarseth. Ruch waited in the car while Vikernes went up to the apartment. Aarseth was stabbed 23 times and found bleeding to death in the stairwell of the building. Vikernes was arrested ten days later.

Øystein Aarseth lived on the fourth floor of the apartment building at 40B. His flat faced the inner courtyard. The property is private and gated, and entry is not permitted, though the apartment can be seen from both Tøyengata and Herslebsgate.
