Fehmarn is a Baltic Sea island municipality of about 13,000 people off Schleswig-Holstein, linked to the mainland by the Fehmarnsund Bridge and best known for wide beaches, windy kite- and windsurfing spots, and rich bird migration (notably at the Wallnau Waterbird Reserve). Its main town, Burg auf Fehmarn, has medieval roots with cobbled lanes, a brick church and small museums, while coastal highlights include the Flügge, Staberhuk and Marienleuchte lighthouses. Rock history adds a stop at the Jimi Hendrix memorial stone near Flügger Strand, marking his last festival appearance in 1970. Getting in is straightforward by road and rail via Lübeck across the bridge, or by the Scandlines ferry between Puttgarden and Rødby; a fixed Fehmarnbelt tunnel to Denmark is under construction.
