Florence is a Tuscan city of roughly 370,000 people, founded by the Romans in 59 BC and famed as the cradle of the Renaissance. Its compact historic centre is UNESCO-listed, crowned by Brunelleschi’s dome on Santa Maria del Fiore, with the Uffizi’s masterworks and the Ponte Vecchio spanning the Arno. Highlights include the Accademia’s David, the frescoed chapels of Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce, and hilltop viewpoints in Oltrarno and Piazzale Michelangelo. Expect trattorie, wine bars and late cafés tucked among narrow streets, plus artisan workshops on the south bank. Getting in and around is straightforward via Firenze Santa Maria Novella station, the city tram, and flights to Florence (FLR) or nearby Pisa (PSA).
