Fredericia is a historic fortress town on the east coast of Jutland, Denmark, with around 42,000 people in the urban area. It was founded by King Frederik III in 1650 as a strategically placed fortified town beside the Little Belt, and its extensive ramparts remain among the largest and best preserved in Northern Europe. The compact centre still follows the original grid of straight streets inside the fortifications, with landmarks including the Landsoldaten monument and the White Water Tower. Fredericia played an important role during the First Schleswig War, particularly the Battle of Fredericia in 1849, which is still commemorated in the city each July. Its central position also makes Fredericia one of Denmark’s major railway junctions, with direct connections across Jutland and towards Funen and Copenhagen. For metal fans, the city is best known for Metal Magic Festival, an annual underground heavy metal festival founded in Fredericia in 2008 and held over three days each summer.
