Metal Magic Festival is an annual heavy metal festival held at Dronningepladsen in Fredericia, Denmark. Established in 2008, the festival has a strong foundation in traditional heavy metal and the international underground, while also covering thrash, doom, black metal, death metal and other related styles. It takes place over three days with two stages and on-site camping, and has become known for combining established cult bands with newer underground acts from Denmark and abroad.

The festival grew out of metal concerts organised at Ungdommens Hus in Fredericia from 2006. The first of these included Danish black metal bands Denial of God, Ad Noctum and Strychnos. In 2008, several bands became available over the same weekend, leading the organisers to expand a planned concert into a two-day event. The first Metal Magic Festival was held indoors at Ungdommens Hus in October 2008 with twelve bands. The following year it expanded to three days, adding an outdoor stage and camping area.

Metal Magic remained at Ungdommens Hus during its early years before moving to Dronningepladsen in 2017, giving the festival considerably more space while retaining its relatively compact character. During the COVID-19 period, the organisers managed to keep the festival active in altered forms, using Det Bruunske Pakhus in 2020 and Eksercerhuset in 2021 before returning to Dronningepladsen. The current festival site includes an open-air stage, a covered stage, bars, food stalls and camping within the same area.

Booking has traditionally focused on bands that have rarely or never performed in Denmark, alongside younger acts and established names from the underground. The festival has also brought older Danish bands back together for special appearances. Artists appearing over the years have included Candlemass, Master’s Hammer, I Am Morbid, Pagan Altar, Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Nifelheim, Tribulation, Absu, Ved Buens Ende, Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin, Konvent and Denial of God. The 2026 edition continued this approach with a line-up including Blasphemy, Sigh, Nunslaughter, Macabre, Uli Jon Roth, Enforcer, Hellbutcher, Afsky and Smoulder.

Metal Magic has remained deliberately independent in character despite growing considerably since its first edition. Camping has been part of the festival since 2009, and a shuttle bus from Copenhagen Airport was introduced the following year, reflecting the increasing number of international visitors. Rather than relying primarily on major contemporary headliners, the festival has built its identity around underground metal, cult acts, unusual bookings and bands with a strong connection to the genre’s history. From its beginnings as a small indoor event at Ungdommens Hus, Metal Magic Festival has developed into one of Denmark’s longest-running dedicated metal festivals.
