Galway is a harbour city on Ireland’s west coast, with about 86,000 people and a long history at the mouth of the River Corrib where it meets Galway Bay. The settlement grew around a fortification built in 1124 and later became an important medieval trading town, especially under the “Tribes of Galway” merchant families. Today Galway is best known for its lively pub and music culture, colourful streets, student life, festivals and its role as a gateway to Connemara, the Aran Islands and the Wild Atlantic Way. Key sights include Eyre Square, the Latin Quarter, Quay Street, the Spanish Arch, Galway Cathedral, Galway City Museum and the seafront walk out to Salthill. Getting in and around is straightforward via Galway railway and bus stations, with direct links to Dublin and Limerick, local buses across the city and easy onward travel along the west coast.
