Gomel (Homyel) is Belarus’s second-largest city, a riverside centre of about 501,000 people, first mentioned in 1142 on the Sozh River in the country’s southeast. The city’s main landmark is the Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace and Park ensemble, a grand riverside complex with museums, a chapel-mausoleum, a winter garden and landscaped grounds that make for an easy stroll right in the centre. Beyond the park, Gomel’s identity is shaped by wide Soviet-era avenues, green spaces along the river, and its role as a major transport and rail hub linking routes toward Minsk, Moscow and Kyiv.
