The final resting place of Helloween’s founding drummer, Ingo “Mr. Smile” Schwichtenberg (1965–1995) is at Waldfriedhof Volksdorf in Hamburg. In 1995, Schwichtenberg committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. Prior to his suicide he had been suffering from depression, alcohol, drug dependency, and schizophrenia.
The grave itself is modest—a small headstone with his name and dates set in a simple plot—regularly photographed by visitors and included in the cemetery’s public imagery archive. Fans often leaves pumkings at the grave. If you’re going specifically to pay respects, expect a quiet woodland setting typical of Volksdorf.
Notes for visitors: precise plot can be hard to find, but look for a small three not far from the road. Be respectful—this is an active cemetery.
