IOANNINA

Ioannina is the capital of Epirus in northwestern Greece, a lakeside city of about 64,900 people (around 114,000 in the wider municipality), traditionally founded in the 6th century AD and best known for its atmospheric old town inside the Ioannina Castle beside Lake Pamvotis. The city’s signature sights are clustered and easy to combine: the castle quarter and museums linked to Ali Pasha, the waterfront promenade, and the little lake island reached by boat, plus day-trip staples like Perama Cave just a few kilometres from the centre. Despite its historic feel, Ioannina works well as a practical base for the Pindus and Zagori region, with straightforward access via Ioannina Airport (IOA) close to town and good road links across Epirus.
