ISRAEL

Israel’s heavy metal scene began to take shape in the 1980s, largely influenced by the global rise of thrash and heavy metal. Early pioneers like Salem, formed in 1985, are often credited as the first Israeli extreme metal band, blending death/doom elements with Middle Eastern influences and tackling themes ranging from horror to Jewish history.

In the 1990s, the scene diversified, with bands like Orphaned Land gaining international recognition for fusing progressive and doom metal with traditional Middle Eastern melodies and religiously themed lyrics, promoting messages of peace between cultures. Other notable acts include Melechesh, who originated in Jerusalem before relocating to Europe, known for their “Mesopotamian metal” style of black/thrash infused with ancient Middle Eastern themes.

Israel hosts a dedicated underground community with venues in Tel Aviv and Haifa, and has attracted international acts despite political challenges. Festivals like Metalist have brought both local and global metal bands together, strengthening the scene’s presence.
