KAVALA

Kavala is a port city on Greece’s northern Aegean with a walkable centre terraced up the hillside behind its harbour. The landmark Roman-Ottoman aqueduct (Kamares) leads into the Panagia old town, where lanes climb to the Byzantine castle and viewpoints over the bay. Below, the seafront promenade and fishing harbour are lined with cafés and seafood tavernas; tobacco-era warehouses and the Ottoman-era Imaret hint at the city’s layered past, while the Tobacco Museum fills in the story. Beaches sit close—Batis and Kalamitsa within easy reach, with wider sands like Ammolofoi a short drive west—and ferries connect to Thasos and other islands in season. Kavala International Airport (near Chrysoupoli) is about 30 minutes away, and KTEL buses link Thessaloniki, Drama and Xanthi. Stay in the compact centre for restaurants and nightlife, or in beach districts for quieter evenings; day trips take in Philippi’s ancient site and Thasos by ferry.
