Kazakhstan has a relatively small metal scene compared to many European and American countries, but it has produced a few notable acts and a persistent underground—especially in Almaty. One of the best-known long-running bands is Holy Dragons, founded in Almaty in 1992, playing classic heavy metal with strong power/speed influences in an old-school style.
Kazakhstan is also known for the instrumental folk-metal crossover band Ulytau, who blend heavy guitar with traditional Kazakh instruments such as the dombra, helping bring a distinctly local identity into heavier music.
Live metal culture exists mainly through smaller club shows and community-driven events rather than large, established national metal festivals. Overall, metal in Kazakhstan is niche but real—kept alive by dedicated musicians, organisers, and fans.
