Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the co-capital of Spain’s Canary Islands, a northeast-coast port city of roughly 380,000 people with foundations dating to 1478 in the old quarter of Vegueta. The compact centre fans from Vegueta and neighbouring Triana to the famed three-kilometre city beach of Las Canteras, a year-round draw with a lively promenade. Expect layers of colonial and maritime history (Santa Ana Cathedral, Casa de Colón) alongside modern shopping streets and waterside parks, with a mild, dry climate tempered by the Canary Current. Practicalities are easy: Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) sits about 20–30 km south with fast road and bus links into town, and the GC-1/GC-2 motorways thread along the coasts.
