LEICESTER

Leicester is a multicultural East Midlands city of about 369,000 people (2021 census), built on Roman foundations as Ratae Corieltauvorum and recognised again as a city in 1919. It’s best known for its mix of old and new: Roman-era remains like Jewry Wall, medieval streets around the Cathedral Quarter, and a modern identity tied to sport and live music (with big venues such as De Montfort Hall and the O2 Academy). A classic visitor circuit includes the King Richard III Visitor Centre and Leicester Cathedral, the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, and a wander through the Lanes and Market Place for pubs, shops and late-night spots. Getting in is straightforward via direct trains to London and the North, with Birmingham Airport the nearest major hub, and the centre is easy to cover on foot once you’re there.
