MANNHEIM

Mannheim is a Rhine–Neckar city with a distinctive chessboard street grid (“Quadratestadt”) centred on the sandstone Water Tower at Friedrichsplatz and the vast Baroque Mannheim Palace, now part of the university. It mixes industry and culture: the Kunsthalle’s modern and contemporary art, the Nationaltheater, Jesuit Church and riverside promenades sit alongside lively quarters like Jungbusch and the harbour area for bars, venues and late food. Green space is generous—Luisenpark and Herzogenriedpark are easy escapes—and day trips take in Heidelberg’s old town and castle or Schwetzingen’s rococo palace gardens. Getting around is straightforward on foot or by tram and bike; Mannheim Hauptbahnhof is a major ICE/IC hub with fast links to Frankfurt Airport, Stuttgart and beyond.
