MINSK

Minsk is Belarus’s capital and largest city, with roughly 2.0 million residents in the city proper and just over 2.0 million across the wider urban area. First mentioned in 1067 (often treated as the city’s founding date), it’s an old East Slavic settlement that was heavily rebuilt after World War II, giving the centre its broad avenues, monumental architecture and vast public squares. Key stops include Independence Square, Victory Square, the riverside parks along the Svislach, the atmospheric Trinity Suburb, and the futuristic National Library of Belarus, which doubles as a popular viewpoint. Getting around is straightforward via the Minsk Metro (opened in 1984) plus trams and buses, with Minsk National Airport linking the city internationally.
