MONTREUX

Montreux is a lakeside town on the Vaud Riviera with palm-lined promenades, Belle Époque hotels and Alps views across Lake Geneva. Its headline draw is the Montreux Jazz Festival each July, but the rest of the year is easygoing: stroll the flowered lakeshore to photogenic Chillon Castle, hop a CGN paddle steamer to Vevey or Lausanne, or ride the cog railway up to Rochers-de-Naye for panoramas and hiking. East along the shore rise the UNESCO-listed Lavaux terraced vineyards, where cellar doors pour crisp Chasselas with lake breezes drifting through the vines. Trains on the GoldenPass line make scenic runs toward Gstaad and Interlaken, while frequent services link Geneva Airport in about an hour. The compact centre mixes cafés, wine bars and low-key late options, and stays range from grand waterfront hotels to apartments tucked behind the promenade, making Montreux a relaxed base for lake and mountain days.
