NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand’s heavy metal history is closely tied to its geographic isolation, which meant that early metal bands developed with limited access to the wider international scene. Despite this, the country produced a dedicated and diverse underground from the 1980s onward.

One of the first New Zealand metal bands to gain attention was Knightshade, whose melodic hard rock and heavy metal style helped establish a local following in the 1980s.

By the 1990s, the scene began to embrace more extreme sounds. Bands like Sinate and Dawn of Azazel pushed death and black metal into the local consciousness. Bulletbelt would later become known for blending speed and black metal, while Beastwars carved out a reputation internationally for their sludge metal sound.

New Zealand’s Māori and Pacific heritage has also influenced some of its metal, with acts like Alien Weaponry incorporating te reo Māori lyrics and cultural themes into their thrash/groove metal, earning global recognition and touring with major bands.

While the country has no large-scale dedicated metal festivals comparable to Europe, events like Distorted and Storm the Gates have brought both local and international acts together.
