PANAMA

Panama’s metal scene began to take shape in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with pioneers like Cabeza de Martillo (active since the mid-’80s as Hammerhead, renamed in 1996) and Hecatombe (formed in 1990) laying the foundation for death/thrash and black/death sounds.

Through the 2000s, the underground diversified: Encryptor (originating in Panama City before relocating to the U.S.) pushed brutal death/grind; Equinoxio (2004–2016) represented Panamanian black metal; and Sargon (2008–2013) carried the death/thrash torch. In the 2010s, Abatuar (founded in 2013 in Panama City) became one of the country’s most visible extreme exports.

Panama City remains the hub for local shows, with venues like Hangar 18 sustaining the live circuit.
