PHILIP LYNOTT’S GRAVE

Philip Parris Lynott (20 August 1949 – 4 January 1986) was an Irish musician, best known as the co-founder, lead vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter of the hard rock band Thin Lizzy. His later years were marked by drug and alcohol dependency, which led to his collapse on 25 December 1985 at his home in Kew. Though he briefly regained consciousness and spoke to his mother, his condition deteriorated, and he died of pneumonia and heart failure due to septicaemia on 4 January 1986, aged 36.

Lynott’s funeral was held at St Elizabeth’s Church in Richmond on 9 January, with most former Thin Lizzy members in attendance, followed by a second service at Howth Parish Church near Dublin on 11 January.

Philip Lynott’s grave is located in St Fintan’s Cemetery, Sutton — between Sutton and Howth on Dublin’s north coast. Fans continue to leave flowers, guitar picks and notes at the headstone, which also bears the name of his mother, Philomena Lynott (added in 2019). The grave lies in the St Polan’s section, Row I, Plot 13. Pedestrian access to the cemetery is open at all hours, but visitors are encouraged to come during daylight and show respect. From central Dublin, it’s easy to reach by public transport (DART to Sutton, then a short bus or taxi ride).
