Pizzeria Melvin is an Italian restaurant located at Parkveien 4F in Langhus, Norway, a short distance from Langhus railway station where Mayhem took their famous photos. The restaurant serves Italian-style pizzas, pasta and other dishes in a modern dining room with large windows, wooden tables and an outdoor seating area. However, one of its interior walls provides an unexpected connection to Norwegian black metal history.
The wall features a large graffiti mural depicting a man wearing a Mayhem T-shirt and holding a slice of pizza above his head. The artwork, created by Nordre Follo Gatekunst, also incorporates the restaurant’s name in large graffiti-style lettering. It pays tribute to the fact that Mayhem was formed in Langhus in 1984 by guitarist Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth, bassist Jørn “Necrobutcher” Stubberud and drummer Kjetil Manheim. The band went on to become one of the most influential groups in Norwegian black metal. The mural is an unusual reminder of the area’s place in metal history, incorporated into an otherwise ordinary neighbourhood pizzeria.
