RABAT

Rabat is Morocco’s Atlantic-coast capital, a city of about 516,000 residents (with the Salé metro approaching 2 million) whose core dates to the 12th-century Almohad foundations around today’s Kasbah of the Udayas. Highlights pair medieval and modern: the Hassan Tower and Mohammed V Mausoleum, the blue-and-white kasbah quarter above the Bouregreg, and the French-Protectorate “new town” of ministries, gardens and wide boulevards—together inscribed by UNESCO as “Rabat, Modern Capital and Historic City: a Shared Heritage.” Getting around is straightforward via the Rabat–Salé tram, with Rabat-Salé Airport about 10 km away; Chellah’s Roman-medieval ruins and the twin city of Salé sit just across the river.
